Gold’s Gym has been dubbed the Mecca of Bodybuilding. Perhaps the most recognizable name in fitness worldwide, there is little doubt that Gold’s Gym is where many fitness buffs go. Even celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dwayne Johnson, Tiger Woods, Jessica Alba, and Keanu Reeves go to Gold’s Gym to work out and keep their bodies in tip-top condition.

Gold’s Gym opened in 1965 in Venice Beach, California. However, it gained national prominence when it was featured in the 1977 flick Pumping Iron. It claims to have the most number of locations worldwide with 700. It is found in 42 states in the U.S. and 39 countries around the world. With its popularity and sheer number of locations worldwide, there’s a good chance you have seen or been at a Gold’s Gym branch at some point in your life.

With more than 700 locations worldwide, Gold’s Gym has established itself as perhaps the most recognizable fitness center in the planet. As of 2013, there are more than 330 Gold’s Gym branches in the U.S., with 213 located in other countries. There are also around 20 locations in Canada.

Cost to Join

Membership fees differ depending on the location of the Gold’s Gym location. Fees in the United States, for example, are different in Gold’s Gym branches in Europe. In the U.S., monthly membership fees may range from $25 to $30, and this is on top of the initiation fee of $25. Should you cancel your membership, you are obligated to pay a cancellation fee of $89.

Cleanliness

Despite the quite expensive membership fees, Gold’s Gym locations are all well-maintained. Gold’s Gym employ maintenance personnel so almost all areas are cleaned especially the locker rooms and shower rooms. Even gym equipment is well taken care of at Gold’s Gym.

Workout Machine Maintenance

When it comes to the latest in cardio and strength training equipment, expect Gold’s Gym branches to have them. Workout machines are kept in the best conditions. Gold’s Gym has also been investing in new workout equipment. Apart from having state-of-the art equipment, Gold’s Gym also offers physical fitness programs like yoga, cycling, mixed martial arts, and Zumba.

Too Busy

Some Gold’s Gym locations are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week which is critical especially for gym buffs who don’t want to work out in crowded gyms. If you don’t like working out in crowded fitness centers then stay away from Gold’s Gym locations during weeknights and weekends. You might have to go there early in the morning to avoid bumping into other gym goers.

Other Amenities

You would find working out at Gold’s Gym very convenient and enjoyable thanks to the numerous amenities it offers. Most Gold’s Gym locations have exercise studios where you can train with your peers, and cycling studios. Kids’ club is another standard amenity found in Gold’s Gym branches. Your children will surely love going with you to the gym because they can stay in an area especially designed for them.

There are also functional training rooms found in Gold’s Gym locations. Here, you can train using functional training ropes, rocker boards, and kettle bells.

Customer Service or Personal Fitness

Rating: 9/ 10

Gold’s Gym locations are manned by customer service staff that can assist you in your queries regarding membership fees and other concerns. There are also personal trainers who can help design your fitness program and assist you in your workouts.

Most members of Gold’s Gym say that this chain of fitness centers employ some of the best fitness trainers in the world.  This is another reason why Gold’s Gym charges relatively high membership fees.

Locker Room

Gold’s Gym locker rooms are spacious enough to accommodate its members. All members have access to the locker rooms, and they are provided with clean towels and hair dryers. Likewise, locker rooms in Gold’s Gyms are clean thanks to custodians or housekeeping personnel.

Shower Room

Rating: 9 / 10

Again, it’s hard to complain about the shower rooms of Gold’s Gym. Almost all Gold’s Gym branches have spacious and clean shower rooms. Clean towel, shampoo and soap are also provided in some Gold’s Gym locations.

Overall Experience

Rating: 9 / 10

Overall, Gold’s Gym is perhaps the best fitness center out there. In terms of location, it’s hard not to find a Gold’s Gym situated near you. The prices may be a bit high but it is still more affordable compared to other high end fitness centers. And for paying that much, you can get a lot out of your money with the numerous amenities, first-class customer service and well-schooled physical trainers at Gold’s Gym locations.
