The history of LA Fitness began in 1984 with a single gym in Los Angeles, California, but from that solitary location the company grew rapidly and by the 1990s was buying smaller fitness clubs in the Southern California area. At the same time, the company began developing new centers. In 1995 LA Fitness established and built a fitness club that would become the company’s standard model, and after the design proved popular with members, several other clubs were constructed with a dozen built in Arizona and Southern California in 1998 alone. Soon enough their locations spread throughout the upper Midwest, the Northeast, the Mid-Atlantic states and all over the US.

From 2006 to 2009 expansion was rapid with 180 clubs established, following a trend which began in 2000 when LA Fitness acquired Atlanta’s biggest health club chain and put 25 of its own facilities in place. In 2007 the center expanded its operations and purchased six health clubs in Toronto, Canada, and four years later in 2011 bought 171 clubs from Bally Total Fitness for $153 million. LA Fitness’ expansion program is continuing, and in 2012 the company purchased the Lifestyle Family Fitness Clubs. Today the club remains a privately owned firm, with the majority owners being Madison Dearborn Partners, CIVC Partners and Seidler Equity Partners.

Membership Fees and Benefits

LA Fitness prices range slightly depending on your location, but in general, the initiation fee is $99 and then it’s about $30.99 a month from then on. If you are already signed up and want to add a family member, you may do so for no extra initiation fee, and their monthly membership fee will also be $30.99. However, there are many programs available at LA Fitness and that will determine the amount you pay. In addition to this you can also avail of a 3 day guest pass at their website.

Those who join LA Fitness will get the benefit of working with a certified personal trainer who will provide support and keep you motivated during workouts. All members of LA Fitness get a 60 minute free health fitness assessment, and with the services of a personal trainer you will have someone to help you choose the workouts that are most effective in helping reach your goals. Rather than just show you how to use exercise machines, their trainer will teach important workout principles that you can apply anytime.

Group Fitness

LA Fitness membership includes an extensive group class where you can participate in programs that will challenge you yet still have fun. Their aerobics basics provide a low impact workout to get you started, but you can burn up to 330 calories. Their Aqua Fit program on the other hand, is a 50 minute workout that will increase your cardiovascular endurance and physical strength. Because the workout takes place in water and under supervision from a certified trainer, there will be no impact on your joints.

Now if you want to try something different LA Fitness has a belly dancing class for sculpting and toning your body, while Body Work Plus Abs is a light dumbbell workout that improves body strength and balance as well as muscle posture and tone. Their Boot Camp Conditioning on the other hand, is a circuit workout inspired by military training complete with training drills and calisthenics that will increase your agility and strength.

LA Fitness also has a Calorie Crusher program, where ten basic moves will burn up to 550 calories while their Cardio Jam is a fast paced workout for some serious calorie burn, and if you are into sports you can join their Club Boxing Circuit. Other group classes available at LA Fitness are Core Training, the Cycle Zone, Cycle, Latin Heat, Senior Fit and many others.

Other Benefits and Amenities for Members

LA Fitness provides state of the art exercise machines and equipment, and there are group fitness classes available including Senior Stretch, yoga, Kickbox Cardio, Mat Pilates and cycling, and they don’t come with any extra charge. Each fitness center also has saunas, whirlpool spa and heated lap pools, and in addition, their facilities have basketball and racquetball, fully equipped lockers and a kids’ club. All LA Fitness locations are open 7 days a week with some open 24 hours.

Regardless where you apply, their personal trainers will provide guidance and show how to train at the right pace so you will get in shape without risking any injury. Before any workout begins, your trainer will assess your condition and show what your strengths and weaknesses are. Using this information your trainer will develop a customized program that is tailor made for your physique.

If yes, can you please let me registere a membership at this price.

  5. Do not join lafitness, it’s not worth it. They love money more than their customers, joining them is like committing suicide. Please avoid signing up for a personal trainer if you don’t want to curse yourself.

  6. I would like to know how much will cost for family of 4 membership. My 2 kids was a members for long time they paid the initial fee and monthy payments for years, last month we decide my husband and me to join our kids and sign for family membership we been told to cancel our kids membership then wait one month because they paid for it then we can apply as family. We follow all the instructions and when the time came to apply they dont want us to have the offer we been told a month ago.

    • Since all of the LA Fitness are franchise and individually controlled, you will have to go into your local LA Fitness gym and ask for that quote. Also you may check few different locations to get the best deal for you.

  7. Some pretty good info here! Just a few pointers to help you out! When they purchased a lot of ballys clubs it was 171 locations not 17. Also, it is not a franchise and each location is not independently owned. They are privately owned by two guys. Lastly, pricing is variable and subject to change so deals can vary! Looks good otherwise!

  8. La Fitness is NOT a franchise. It is a privately held, family run business. If you would like info on memberships or to join please call – 949.502.2406

  9. I have a month to month membership. Just recently, I signed up for group training sessions, but when I got the contract from my email because they don’t give you a printed one at the gym, and it said 12 months. I called the gym the same day and was told by the trainer that they use the same contract for everything, but he assured me that like my membership, I am on a month to month plan, and that I could cancel whenever I was ready. I haven’t even started my sessions yet, but I’m really concerned about cancelling. There’s no way I can pay for 12 months of training classes. Is what he said true?

  10. Hi, im 13 years old and i play volleyball and i would like to occasionally go to LA fitness with my dad and run some for health and mainly for volleyball. on the internet it says you must be 16 years old, although all of my other friends have managed to get a membership.

    Please help,
    Thank you.

  11. I signed up with L.A Fitness in Sept 2014 before the opening of the gym in Niagara Falls. For 3 months they held my money..In December 2014 my curiousity led me to find out the gym was opening Dec 31 2014 at 12 pm. I expected a notification prior to this date so I would not incurr additional charges from my previous gym ($60). It did not happen. It appears the contract was not completed correctly by a person with limited experience and they did not include my email, however there was a phone number.. The local LA people did attempt to appease my concern for starting this relationship on the wrong foot, however I was told I would not be reimbursed or get creditted due to corporate leadership ( Is this really true considering it is a franchise?). I feel this is unfair and lack professionallism in trying to build clientele in a new city.. in addition I received a letter from the Brampton HQ dated Jan 2, 2015 indicating the Falls site was open, but it was mailed Jan 15 !!! WTF.. not sure why you have a problem with notifying people if you ask for their email.

  12. I have had my lifetime membership since 1972. Renewal is only $69 annually. I am putting it up for sale for only $1800. This is a real money saving opportunity for someone who would like to be a member for years to come, and save hundreds of dollars..

  13. Do prices ever increase? I’m still paying $29.99 but their website says new members pay $39.99 now. When can I expect my rate to increase?
